LSU Rally Comes Up Short in Rubber Game

Posted by clintdomingue on March 24, 2019 in Blogs, Latest News

The first two games in Athens, Georgia were low-scoring affairs between LSU and the Georgia Bulldogs. Sunday saw the bats come out in a big way, but the Bulldogs were able to hold on late in the rubber game with a 9-7 win.

How It Happened:

The Bulldogs got on the board in the bottom of the third when John Cable sent one out on a rope to right field for a grand slam. LSU finally got on the board in the fifth when Brandt Broussard hit a sac fly to left field to score Daniel Cabrera.

Georgia poured it on in the seventh with a pair of runs including an RBI single by LJ Talley to give them a sizable 6-1. The Tigers rallied though in the top of the eighth with Josh Smith leading off the inning with a solo shot. After a sac fly by Chris Reid, made it 6-3, Daniel Cabrera made it a one-run ballgame with a two-run bomb to right field.

The Bulldogs responded with a three-run inning with a two-run home run from Austin Biggar followed up by a solo shot by Tucker Maxwell.

Daniel Cabrera tried to get things going in the ninth with a one-out RBI single to right field. But after a DiGiacomo grounder to second scored Duplantis, Broussard grounded out to end the ballgame and give Georgia the series.

Big Number: 10

Leaving 10 runners on base is usually a recipe for disaster, and LSU may have avoided that for the most part despite leaving all those runners on base. If not for those home runs in the eighth, this could have been a rough afternoon for the Tigers.

Player of the Game: John Cable

He only had one hit, but it was impactful with that grand slam in the bottom of the third starting things off.

Next Up: Tuesday vs McNeese State
