LSU Drops Tough One to Southern

Posted by clintdomingue on April 9, 2019 in Blogs, Latest News

Heading into Tuesday night’s matchup, it felt like the LSU Tigers would cruise to a relatively easy win over the Southern Jaguars. After the first inning, it became clear that wasn’t going to be the case, resulting in a 7-2 win for the Jags.

How It Happened:

Southern fired out of the gates strong with a four-run first inning thanks to a two-run double from Cody Taylor and a two-run single courtesy of Willie Ward.

Tyler LaPorte increased the Jaguars lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second with a groundout to Josh Smith to get Hampton Hudson across home plate.

Brandt Broussard finally got the Tigers on the board in the seventh with a sac fly out to left field. It was enough though as Southern slammed the door shut in the bottom frame with a two-run single by Ashanti Wheatley.

Big Number: 2

This was an LSU offense that many didn’t expect to see after the way they ended the series against Texas A&M with only two hits on the night. They got a lot of free passes with six walks, but they just couldn’t capitalize on the opportunities.

Player of the Game: Willie Ward

Ward may not have had as many hits as Tyler LaPorte but he made them count with an early two-run single to help set the tone for the rest of the night.

Next Up: Friday at Mizzou; First Pitch at 6:30 pm
