In order to avoid the effects of Tropical Storm Laura, the Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Angels decided to play two on Tuesday.
The Astros dominated the first game of the twinbill in large part because of a big five-run first inning that was all jumpstarted by a two-run single from Yuli Gurriel. Houston’s first baseman put another run on the board in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double to left field to make it a 6-0 contest.
The Angels tried to get a rally going in the fifth after a pair runs coming across, but it wasn’t enough in game one of the twinbill.
A little more than thirty minutes after game one wrapped up the roles were reversed with Los Angeles putting up a four-run first inning thanks to a fielding error from Josh Reddick that allowed three runs to come across. The Angels got two more runs across in the fourth and fifth innings and the Astros were able to respond in the bottom of the fifth with another offensive outburst, scoring four runs with the big highlight being a solo shot from Abraham Toro. That cut the lead down to 6-4, but another big inning from Los Angeles in the seventh that was highlighted by a two-run double by Shohei Ohtani sealed the deal for the Angels, winning the second game of the doubleheader 12-5.
The Astros will have the next couple of days off after Wednesday’s contest was postponed and moved to September 5th as part of a doubleheader and will resume action this Friday when they take on the Oakland A’s with first pitch slated for 8:10 pm.
