After multiple lightning delays on Wednesday evening, the STM Cougars baseball team played out their game against E.D. White in the Select Divison II semifinals. The Cougars struggled to get on base in a pitcher’s duel as the Cardinals eliminated STM 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Cougars opened the game batting but the inning went by quickly as E.D. White’s starting pitcher Tyler Weimer struck out two.

At the bottom of the first, the Cardinals put up the first run on the board as Brendan Gaubert drove in Matthew Melancon with an RBI single into left field.

The weather came into play at the bottom of the second with one out after STM threatened to score at the top of the frame but couldn’t put a run on the board. The delay lasted four hours and the game wouldn’t resume until 9:45.

With two outs at the top of the third, Tanner Hornback was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. Connor Stelly brought home Hornback with an RBI double down the left field line to tie the game at a run a piece.

E.D. White threatened to score at the bottom of the fifth as the Cardinals’ Melancon made it to third base off multiple sacrifice outs. STM’s Noah Melancon stuck out Braxton Comeaux to keep the game even.

It became a pitcher’s duel in the following innings as we wouldn’t see another run scored until the seventh as Dylan Robichaux scored the winning run.

In the final inning, Robichaux and Matthew Melancon were both walked with Noah Melancon being taken out for relief pitcher Thomas Couvillon. The baseball hit Gaubert in the foot to load the bases, and Braxton Comeaux recorded his first hit with two outs. That single drove in Robichaux as E.D. White defeated STM 2-1.

BIG NUMBER: 17

There were 17 total strikeouts between both teams in Wednesday night’s semifinals contest as Tyler Weimer had 12 while Noah Melancon had four and Thomas Couvillon had one in his 1/3 of an inning on the mound.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Tyler Weimer

Weimer had himself a night as he went all seven innings and struck out 12 batters, leading to the Cardinals eliminating the Cougars by a score of 2-1.
