Pineville High’s Allison Frye brought the first state softball championship home to her alma mater in almost three decades.
Meanwhile, Chris Schexnaydre led Dutchtown baseball to its first state runner-up finish in 17 years.
In his 19th season as head coach, Schexnaydre guided the Griffins to an upset of No. 1 Barbe in the Division I nonselect quarterfinals, and into the finals for just the third time in school history, and the first time since Schexnaydre’s second year as head coach.
Frye, who played for Pineville from 2003-06, guided the Lady Rebels (29-9) to their first championship since 1998. They steamrolled their way to the Division I select title, run-ruling all four of their playoff opponents.
Frye and Schexnaydre were selected as Coach of the Year for Class 5A softball and baseball, as chosen by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
It’s the first Coach of the Year honor for Frye, who was a three-time LSWA all-state selection as a player at Pineville and previously led Holy Savior Menard to the Class 2A title in 2015. It’s the second for Schexnaydre, who also was Coach of the Year in 2009, the last time the Griffins were state runners-up.
Pineville’s district rival, West Monroe, boasted the Most Outstanding Player in sophomore Evie West who helped lead the Lady Rebels to the Division I nonselect semifinals.
After transferring from Sterlington along with her older sister, Ava, when their dad, Brian, got the West Monroe job, Evie West batted .505 with 19 home runs and 60 RBIs. She was also 18-4 with a 3.53 ERA in the circle.
Hahnville junior third baseman/pitcher Koa Romero, an LSU commitment, is the Most Outstanding Player on the baseball team. He posted a 6-2 record and 1.15 ERA and also hit .433 with 10 homers and 42 RBIs for the Division I nonselect quarterfinalists.
