D-LOH’S PREP FIVE: STM remains team to beat

Posted by dawsoneiserloh on September 26, 2023 in Blogs, Dawson's Blogs, Featured, High School Sports, Latest News, Local News, Sports News, What's Hot, What's New

Week four of High School Football in the Acadiana area saw lightning delays, rain delays, and plenty of competitive games. Some of the best teams stumbled for the first time, but others continued to roll. District play is starting very soon for most of the area, so teams are trying to get things figured out on both sides of the ball.

Here are my five takeaways from the fourth week of action.

  1. No dethroning of STM for now: The Cougars just continue to stack impressive wins. This week, they avenged their only loss from last year, defeating powerhouse Catholic of Baton Rouge 35-28. This iteration of the Cougars has its differences from last year’s title team but may be even better when it’s all said and done.
  2. LCA and Notre Dame have hiccups: LCA dropped one spot in the LSWA 4A poll, moving from #2 to #3. That is due to a tough road loss, 29-26 at Ruston. The Knight offense was finally somewhat slowed down. Notre Dame also stumbled, losing 34-14 to Teurlings. The game was close at the half, but the Pios could not find a way to score consistently.
  3. Eunice keeps finding a way: The Eunice Bobcats won two of their first three games, but only by a combined four points. Once again on Friday, the Bobcats were not perfect but did enough to beat Northwest at home 19-8 to improve to 3-1. Coach Vige has a mix of experience and youth that so far has had the right mix to win close games. This week is another huge test, as they will host Catholic of New Iberia on Friday night.
  4. Acadiana gearing up for brutal second-half stretch: The Wreckin’ Rams of Acadiana fell in week one to LCA, but have been rolling since then. However, the second half of the season has matchups with John Curtis, Southside, and Carencro, among others. We will get a chance to find out how good this year’s Acadiana team really is soon.
  5. Vermilion Catholic trying to run the table: Last year’s Eagles team was undefeated all the way until a loss in the Superdome to Ouachita Christian. While not as dominant, this year’s team is out to another 4-0 start and will have a chance to do the same. This time, they will look to get one step further than they did a year ago.

Dawson Eiserloh is the co-host of “RP3, D-Loh & Meche” which is broadcast weekdays (11-1) on ESPN 103.7 Lafayette and 104.1 Lake Charles — Southwest Louisiana’s Sports Station.
