Press release from LSWA

Two state championship winning guards received Outstanding Player honors to highlight the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 2A All-State basketball teams.

Franklin senior guard Jay’shaun Johnson led the boys team after guiding the Hornets to the Division IV nonselect state championship. It was Franklin’s first state title in basketball since 1958.

Johnson, who averaged 18.4 points per game, 4.5 rebounds per game, 7.2 assists per game and 6.3 steals per game, will continue his career as a football player at Grambling. He also was the District 8-2A MVP.

Rosepine senior guard Kelly Norris helped the Eagles capture the Division III nonselect championship. She averaged 16 points per game, 13 rebounds per game, 8.7 assists per game, 2.0 steals per game and was District 4-2A MVP. She earned the championship game MVP.

Franklin coach Tremayne Johnson was the boys team Coach of the Year. Despite being the No. 6 seed in the Division IV bracket, Johnson guided the Hornets to an historic run through the playoffs, finishing with a 50-45 win over No. 1 Lakeview in the state championship game at Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles. Franklin finished as a state runner-up in 2023.

Rosepine coach CT Kiely was the girls team Coach of the Year. Kiely led the Eagles to their second consecutive Division III title.

As the No. 1 seed, Rosepine rolled through the Division III playoffs, finishing with a 50-46 win over No. 2 Amite in the state championship game at the University Center in Hammond.
