Heath Schroyer is taking on a new role.
The McNeese Director of Athletics has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Council and NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee. Schroyer will serve as the representative for the Southland Conference.
The NCAA announced that the appointments will begin immediately and will be effective through 2028.
“It’s an honor to be selected to serve on the D1 Council and the Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee,” Schroyer said. “It’s a true honor for me to be a part of this amazing organization and to represent McNeese, Southwest Louisiana and the Southland Conference on the national level.
“I’m extremely excited to learn from some of the best in the profession and I’m truly humbled by this opportunity!”
The Division I Council, which is made up of 40 individuals consisting of conference commissioners, athletics directors, athletics administrators, senior women’s administrators, faculty athletics representatives, and student-athletes, is a high-level group responsible for the day-to-day decision-making for Division I.
“Congratulations to Heath Schroyer on his selection as the NCAA Division I Council Representative for the Southland Conference and his new role on the NCAA Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee,” said Southland Commissioner Chris Grant. “With his dedication to student-athletes and extensive experience as a former student-athlete, head coach, and esteemed athletic director, we are thrilled to have him shaping NCAA governance. His leadership will be instrumental in championing the student-athlete experience and uncovering new opportunities for success during these transformative times in intercollegiate athletics.”
The Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee will supervise qualifications and/or selection procedures for the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. The committee reviews recommendations from the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee and process other issues related to the administration of the championship.
The committee, which is comprised of representatives from each divisional group, will also provide direction to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Rules Committee regarding playing rules.
McNeese Athletics has seen remarkable growth under Schroyer, financially, on the field of competition, and in the classroom.
This past athletic season, McNeese finished second in the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings – the department’s highest-ever finish. The Cowboys and Cowgirls have won a total of 10 conference championships under his watch while football, men’s and women’s basketball, and softball have led the league in attendance under his watch.
