The New Orleans Saints are expected to be without their starting quarterback.
Saints signal caller Derek Carr will likely miss multiple games after suffering an oblique injury late in Monday night’s contest against the Kansas City Chiefs. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo broke the news on X late Monday afternoon.
Carr’s injury occurred in the fourth quarter on a fourth-down shot play to wide receiver Mason Tipton. Backup second-year quarterback Jake Haener replaced Carr and finished out the game under center, as the Saints dropped their record to 2-3 in the 26-13 primetime matchup.
Carr’s final stats in the loss were 18-28 for 165 yards, two touchdowns, and an opening drive interception. “Not good,” was how Carr described how he felt during the post-game press conference.
New Orleans has a couple of young options to start at quarterback. The two players to choose from are Haener and rookie Spencer Rattler. Garafolo went further into the news by saying that it is believed Rattler is a strong candidate to start in Carr’s absence.
The Black and Gold return home on Sunday to face NFC South rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers, then turn around for a Thursday Night home matchup with the Denver Broncos. A game where the former Saints head coach will return to New Orleans, a place that Payton called home for over a decade and a half. Their next two games after that will be road games against the Los Angeles Chargers and Carolina Panthers.
