Former LSU Tiger and current Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes was named Jackie Robinson National League Rookie of the Year, the league announced on Monday.
The honor comes after an historic rookie season for the right-hander, who was called up in May.
He went onto post an incredible 1.96 ERA to go along with an 11-3 record. He struck out 170 batters over 133 innings of work, making history in multiple ways.
Skenes was selected as an All-Star, and became the first rookie to start the All-Star Game since 1995.
The Pirates finished the season 76-86 and missed out on the playoffs.
During his lone season at LSU, Skenes burst onto the scene as one of the best pitchers in America. He helped the Tigers win the 2023 College World Series, and was named the Most Outstanding Player of that event.
After his incredible year at LSU, Skenes was selected by the Pirates with the #1 overall pick of the 2023 MLB First Year Player Draft.
