Title IX Tuesday: Becky Hammon

Posted by alanmichael on November 17, 2015 in Featured

Title IX is a comprehensive federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity. The principal objective of Title IX is to avoid the use of federal money to support sex discrimination in education programs and to provide individual citizens effective protection against those practices.

Becky Hammon certainly does things her own way. While Keith Van Horn and Andre Miller were putting the WAC on the map at Utah, she cemented herself as the conference’s all-time leading scorer during her legendary career at Colorado State. Then she went on to the WNBA where she put up over 5,000 career points despite a career riddled with knee problems. She was an absolutely clutch player who made huge shots in big situations. Her contributions to the league that many said would never last, laid a significant foundation for today’s female ballers.

In 2008, Hammon was denied the chance to represent the USA in the Beijing Olympics. Playing in the Russian league during her WNBA off-season, Hammon opted to obtain Russian citizenship in order to play on the Olympic stage. This not only allowed her to represent Russia that year, but it also enabled Hammon to make triple the amount she was making as a citizen rather than as a foreigner playing in Russia. While this screams of treason and might make your red, white, and blue American blood boil; you gotta respect this woman’s shrewd business tactics and her thirst to compete on one of the biggest and brightest stages.

While gaining international notoriety as one of the most prolific scorers in women’s hoops history, Becky Hammon was always vocal about wanting to coach one day. In 2013 Hammon was injured while a member of the San Antonio Stars. During her rehab she attended meetings and practices for the San Antonio Spurs, developing relationships with coaches and players to the extent that she was often encouraged to give her opinion on schemes and techniques. One year later, Gregg Popovich offered Hammon a full time position on the Spurs staff, making her the first ever full time female coach in NBA history. Just this past summer, Hammon was given the keys to the Ferrari when Pop made her the NBA Summer League Head Coach for San Antonio. Hammon led the Spurs to the 2015 Summer League Championship.

If Becky Hammon never even jumped into coaching, she was still would be recognized as one of the all-time badasses in sports. Now that she is being groomed by one of the greatest head coaches in NBA history to one day, possibly, become the first female head coach in the NBA; Becky Hammon is on her way to becoming an immortal.
