McNeese Cowboys’ star freshman Larry Johnson is headed back to Lake Charles after all.
After announcing his intentions to enter the Transfer Portal last week, Johnson has decided to stay with McNeese for the upcoming college basketball season. Cowboys’ head coach Bill Armstrong confirmed the news after Johnson announced it via his Instagram page.
As a freshman, Johnson averaged 17.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. He broke the record of Joe Dumars at McNeese and ranked 12th in the NCAA among freshman in scoring.
“Larry had an incredible freshman season for the us,” said Armstrong. “Breaking Joe Dumars’ freshman scoring record was an amazing accomplishment which speaks volumes to his talent and work ethic. From day one when he walked on campus, we believed Larry had the potential to be special player and he certainly did not disappoint.”
McNeese will look to head back to the NCAA Tournament for a fourth straight year behind Johnson in the 2026-27 season.
