The Houston Astros made a trade to add much-needed infield depth.
Houston acquired infielder Raynel Delgado from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for cash considerations. Delgado will report to Triple-A Sugar Land.
The 26-year-old Cuban versatile infielder has played the entire 2026 season at Triple-A Durham, hitting .250 with 14 doubles, three homers, and 33 RBI in 61 games. This season, Delgado has played third base (30 games), shortstop (19 games), and second base (7 games).
The addition of Delgado gives Houston a backup infielder.
The Astros placed infielder Nick Allen on the 10-day injured list on Monday with a Grade 1 left hamstring strain. Braden Shewmake went on the 10-day IL on June 2 with a right adductor strain and is rehabbing in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Not to mention, Carlos Correa underwent surgery to repair the tendon in his left ankle on May 11 and is out for the season. Correa entered the season as Houston’s starting third baseman, but played mostly at shortstop this year while starting shortstop Jeremy Peña missed a little more than a month with a hamstring strain.
The Cleveland Guardians selected Delgado in the sixth round of the 2018 Major League Baseball draft. In 2024, he signed with the Milwaukee Brewers organization and in 125 career games for the Nashville Sounds — Milwaukee’s Triple-A team — Delgado batted .281 with five home runs, 53 RBI, and 40 stolen bases.
He signed with the Tampa Bay Rays this past offseason.
