The Houston Astros defeated to the Los Angeles Angels 7-4 on Wednesday night in Anaheim. Houston swept the series and evened their record to 55-55 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Angels started righty Grayson Rodriguez, who has had a rough season in 2026 after returning from injury. He was able to work around a couple of first inning base runners to get out of the jam.
The Astros sent Hayden Wesneski to oppose him, making his long awaited return from injury. Wesneski missed most of 2025 and had not appeared yet this season prior to this outing. He struggled early, allowing four hits and three runs in the first. Vaughn Grissom drove in two with an RBI double. That gave the Angels an early 3-0 advantage.
Houston would respond quickly in the second, getting a run on a solo home run from Yainer Diaz. That made it 3-1.
Jeremy Pena struck to start the Houston third, adding another run via the solo homer. The Astros would go on to load the bases with two outs in the frame, but Rodriguez wiggled out of trouble with a 3-2 lead in tact.
Both pitchers settled in during the middle frames, keeping the score where it was. Rodriguez was done after five innings, with the two runs allowed.
In the sixth, the ‘Stros would take their first lead of the night. Cam Smith hit a two-run double to make it 4-3. Then, a wild pitch scored an extra run to make it 5-3 in favor of the visitors.
Houston added one more in the seventh with another RBI from Diaz. They would give that insurance run back, however in the eighth inning.
In the ninth, Diaz recorded his fourth hit of the night. The throw to first got away, allowing Houston to take a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
Bryan Abreu would go for a four-out save for Houston after getting the final out of the eighth. He was able to set the Angels down in order, completing the sweep for the ‘Stros.
BIG NUMBER: 3
The win for Houston was their sixth over the Angels this season. However, all five previous were by two runs or less. The three-run differential was the largest in an Astros win over Los Angeles this season.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Yainer Diaz
Diaz led the way with a 4-5 performance. He started the Astros’ scoring with a home run and ended it as well with a single in the 9th.
UP NEXT: The Astros will be off on Thursday before returning home to host the Rangers in a three-game set beginning on Friday night.
