Ragin’ Cajuns Baseball came away with a solid 5-3 victory over a stingy Princeton team in Game 1 of the NCAA Lafayette Regionals last night. This game saw some very clutch moments from a handful of Cajuns. From Steven Sensley sending the crowd into a frenzy with an early solo shot to reliever Eric Carter’s sixth inning appearance where he staved off a serious Princeton threat with the bases loaded; Tobny Robichaux’ team showed up when they needed to. Here is hard throwing righty Eric Carter talking about what was going through his mind after he gave up the lead and walked the bases loaded only to save the day for the Cajuns:
Outfielder Kennon Fontenot did not have the most magical of seasons early on. Fontenot struggled mightily at the plate and Tony Robichaux even acknowledged the rumblings amongst the fans and the media about whether or not Fontenot belonged. Late in the year though, Fontenot has shown he has found a knack for timely hits and in the 5th inning he gave the Cajuns the lead with a solo homer and later on tied the game at 3 with a two out RBI single. Here’s the quiet outfielder acknowledging his change of fortune at the plate:
The game winning hit came from yet another clutch Cajun, Joe Robbins, who smashed a triple in the eighth to score Hunter Kasuls. The pitch Robbins pulled was not normally one he would’ve pulled so hard, but he was happy to fix his early struggles in last night’s game just in the nick of time:
With so many Cajuns answering the call at key moments, Tony Robichaux was pleased to say the least. The Cajuns’ skipper said he was happy with Freshman pitcher Nick Lee’s performance but knew when he made the switch to Carter it was time for a veteran arm. Robichaux also acknowledged just how big Carter leaving the bases loaded in the sixth. When asked about Dylan Moore’s save at the end of the game, Tony Robichaux answered with another classic “Robeism.” Enjoy:
The Cajuns will play Game of the NCAA Lafayetten Regional later today (weather permitting) against Arizona with the winner advancing the championship round on Sunday.
