This wasn’t exactly the way the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns wanted to open up their first series at home in two weeks. The Arkansas State offense combined with multiple errors caught up to the Cajuns, resulting in 12-6 loss.
How It Happened:
The Red Wolves got on the board in the top of the first on a bases-loaded balk, but the real fireworks didn’t get started until the second inning when they put up four runs highlighted by a two-run single to right field by Will Zimmerman.
Arkansas State made it 6-0 in the fourth with an RBI single up the middle from Tyler Duncan, but the Cajuns responded in the bottom frame with a two-out rally that saw Orynn Veillon hit a two-run ground-rule double. That was followed up by an RBI single by Kole McKinnon to make it a 6-3 ballgame.
The Red Wolves slammed the door shut in the seventh inning with a five-run inning that was highlighted by a two-run double to left field by Alex Howard.
Big Number: 3
Three errors were just too many to overcome and each of those resulted in runs on the board. The Cajuns are typically a solid team defensively, but they just couldn’t get out of their own way.
Player of the Game: Orynn Veillon
Veillon is without a doubt a utility player and he had one heck of a night. Not only did he go four-for-four including a two-run double, he threw two innings of relief work allowing one run off of one hit, walked two, and struck out four. While it didn’t mean much in the endgame, it was still impressive.
