Welcome everyone to another edition of Around the Boot! Every week we look at the other teams around the state of Louisiana that don’t get the same amount of coverage on the station as the LSU Tigers or the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns.
Southern Jags:
The Jags opened up conference play on the wrong foot on Saturday with a 48-31 loss. Alcorn State dominated in the run game thanks to De’Lance Turner running for 272 of the team’s 383 yards.
Southern returns home on Saturday when they take on Fort Valley State with kickoff set for 6 pm.
Tulane Green Wave:
You have to give head coach Willie Fritz a ton of credit for the game winning drive on Saturday against Army. In that final drive, the Green Wave went for it on 4th down three times and converted each of them to come away with a 21-17 victory.
The Green Wave have this week off and will take on Tulsa on October 7th with kickoff set for 3 pm.
Louisiana Tech Bulldogs:
The Bulldogs have a lot to be proud of when it comes to their performance this weekend even in a 17-16 loss to South Carolina. Louisiana Tech took a two-point lead off of a 25-yard field goal from Barnes with 55 seconds left in the ballgame. However, the Gamecocks got the last laugh with a 31-yard field goal in the final seconds from Parker White to come away with the win.
The Bulldogs will return to Ruston this Saturday when they take on South Alabama with kickoff set for 6 pm.
McNeese State Cowboys:
McNeese State had a rough first half against Houston Baptist, trailing 10-6 at the half. The Cowboys bounced back with two touchdown passes from James Tabary and a touchdown from David Hamm giving them a 27-12 victory.
While Tabary was able to get the Cowboys back in it, his two interceptions wound up being a key reason why Houston Baptist was out in front. McNeese State hits the road on Saturday to take on Stephen F. Austin with kickoff set for 6 pm.
Nicholls State Colonels:
Nicholls State ran into a proverbial buzzsaw this past weekend when they traveled to Bowers Stadium, falling to Sam Houston State 66-17. Nicholls had an early lead, but the Bearkats offense proved to be too much scoring 38 unanswered points.
The Colonels will stay on the road when they take on Lamar with kickoff set for 7 pm.
Grambling State Tigers:
Grambling continues to have a stellar 2017 season with a convincing 38-6 victory over Mississippi Valley State, improving to 3-1. The Tigers defense was a key factor with De’Aumante Johnson recording three interceptions in the first half.
Grambling will stay on the road to participate in the Chicago Football Classic against Clark Atlanta with kickoff set for 3:30 pm.
