Welcome everyone to another edition of Around the Boot! Every week we look at the other teams around the state of Louisiana that don’t get the same amount of coverage on the station as the LSU Tigers or the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns.
Southern Jaguars:
Southern University finally got off the schneid on Saturday night with a 34-14 win over Fort Valley State. Herb Edwards carried the load after Devon Benn left the game with an injury, racking up a career-high 141 yards rushing.
The Jaguars resume SWAC play with a homecoming matchup against Alabama A&M with kickoff set for 6 pm.
Tulane Green Wave:
Tulane had the week off and will take on Tulsa on October 7th with kickoff set for 3 pm.
Louisiana Tech Bulldogs:
The Bulldogs had a bounce back performance after two suboptimal performances against SEC teams with a 34-16 victory over South Alabama. Gavin Patterson wound up getting the Jags within one point in the third quarter, but Louisiana Tech took things over in the fourth quarter with 17 straight points to improve to 3-2.
Louisiana Tech will hit the road next week when they take on UAB with kickoff set for 3 pm.
McNeese State Cowboys:
McNeese State took care of business on the way to improving to 4-1 on the year with a 35-0 shutout of Stephen F. Austin for only the second time in the series. The Cowboys were helped out by a strong run game combo of David Hamm and Justin Pratt. Both combined for 289 yards on the ground.
McNeese State will stay in the state of Texas for their matchup against Abilene Christian with kickoff set for 7 pm.
Nicholls State Colonels:
Nicholls State bounced back from a big loss last week to Sam Houston State with a 41-14 victory over Lamar. The Colonels defense looked great, racking up eight tackles for loss including a sack from Hezekiah White.
The run game was crucial for this offense with Kyran Irvin and Jeremy Rounds both racking up 100 yards. Nicholls State will have their homecoming game with in-state rival Northwestern State. Kickoff is set for 6:30 pm.
Southeastern Louisiana Lions
The Lions offense exploded in the first half with 42 points on the way to a big win over Northwestern State. Lorenzo Nunez looked good, completing eight of 11 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns before letting Byron Walker taking over in the second half.
Southeastern Louisiana will have their homecoming on Saturday, hosting Incaranate Word with kickoff set for 4 pm.
Grambling State Tigers:
Grambling wrapped up the month of September the right way with a 31-20 victory over Clark Atlanta to improve to 4-1 on the year. Devante Kincade was Mr. Everything for the Tigers in the Chicago Football Classic with 278 yards and 3 touchdowns through the air and 31 yards on the ground.
Grambling will head over to Texas for a SWAC matchup against Prairie View A&M at the Cotton Bowl as part of the State Fair Classic. Kickoff is set for 4 pm.
