The Houston Astros announced on Thursday that they claimed right-handed pitcher Miguel Diaz off waivers from the Detroit Tigers and outfielder Cooper Hummel from the San Francisco Giants.

Astros General Manager Dana Brown made the announcement and also unveiled that right-handed pitchers Luis Garcia and Penn Murfee were placed on the 60-day injured list.

Diaz will join the Astros’ active roster and take the spot of Dylan Coleman, who was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land. Hummel meanwhile has been assigned to Triple-A Sugar Land.

The 29-year-old Diaz made 12 appearances (three starts) for the Tigers during the 2023 season, posting a 0.64 ERA with 16 strikeouts, a 0.929 WHIP and a .163 opponent batting average.

Diaz played for the San Diego Padres (2017-19, ‘21) and then the Tigers (2022-23). He has gone 6-2 with a 4.84 ERA and .232 opponent batting average through 87 games (8 starts).

Hummel spent the majority of 2023 with Triple-A Tacoma in the Seattle Mariners organization, batting .262 with 27 doubles, six triples, eight homers, 47 RBI, 26 stolen bases, and a .844 OPS in 104 games. He also has MLB experience playing in 66 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2022 and 10 games for the Mariners in 2023.

Garcia is still recovering from Tommy John surgery performed on May 19, 2023. He has gone 28-19 with a 3.61 ERA in 69 games (63 starts) through parts of four Major League seasons with the Astros.

Murfee was claimed off waivers from the Atlanta Braves on March 27 and is recovering from a UCL procedure performed in June 2023. Murfee recorded a 1.29 ERA with 16 strikeouts, a 1.07 WHIP and a .109 opponent batting average in 16 games with the Seattle Mariners in 2023.

The Houston Astros will begin a weekend series against defending World Series champion Texas Rangers on Friday. The first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and you can listen to the game live on News Talk 98.5 FM.
