The Houston Astros fell 4-3 to the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night inside the Rogers Centre. The loss came after a blown save from Bryan Abreu.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Blue Jays (83-61) went with right-hander Shane Bieber on the mound. He got off to a rocky start, as Carlos Correa mashed a two-run home run to give the Astros an early 2-0 advantage.
The Astros (78-67) had Luis Garcia make his second start of the season. He worked a clean first inning, but that would be his only full inning of the day. In the second inning, trainers had to go out and Garcia was removed from the game after just an inning and two-thirds.
The game would remain 2-0 for the next several frames as AJ Blubaugh came in to eat innings for the Astros after the injury.
In the top of the sixth, the Astros got an insurance run when Yainer Diaz came through with an RBI. However, that extra run was matched by Toronto in the bottom half when George Springer, the former Astro, launched a solo shot to make it 3-1.
Down the stretch, both bullpens held up. Bryan Abreu came on in the ninth with a two-run lead but walked the first batter. With one out, a single and another walk loaded the bases, giving Toronto a prime opportunity to tie or win the game. Isaiah Kiner-Falefa came through with a two-run single to tie the game. Abreu was able to get out of the jam after that, but the game was tied 3-3 and headed to extras.
After a scoreless top half of the tenth, Toronto got an infield single that moved the ghost runner to third. Then, another infield hit got home the winning run as Toronto won 4-3.
BIG NUMBER: 7
Luis Garcia only faced seven batters before departing with an elbow injury. It’s the same elbow injury that has cost Garcia multiple seasons worth, and is certainly troubling for the thin Astros’ pitching staff.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Isaiah Kiner-Falefa
Isaiah Kiner-Falefa came up huge with the game tying two run single in the bottom of the ninth. It kept the game alive for Toronto and allowed them to complete the comeback later.
