The Houston Astros fell to the Washington Nationals 2-1 on Monday night inside Daikin Park. The loss extends a now five-game losing streak, the longest of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Astros (60-47) turned to Framber Valdez to start this one. He worked a clean first, striking out two and retiring the Nats in order.
The Nationals (44-62) countered with Brad Lord, a 25-year-old right-hander. He began with a 1-2-3 inning of his own, keeping this game 0-0 early.
Each team would trade zeroes until the bottom of the fifth when Houston got in the board first. Mauricio Dubon delivered an RBI double to make it 1-0.
The Nationals would answer in the top of the sixth, as Nathaniel Lowe used an RBI double of his own to make it 1-1. An inning later, Washington took their first lead on a Riley Adams solo home run. That made it 2-1.
The lead would stay that way in the late frames. Despite a leadoff double from Christian Walker in the eighth, Houston could not capitalize. They fell 2-1.
BIG NUMBER: 3
The Astros have now been held to three runs or less in each game of their five-game skid.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Riley Adams
The Adams Homer was the difference in this game. He went 2-4 to raise his average to just .169, but it was enough to help his team tonight.
