The Houston Astros acquired right-handed pitcher Dylan Coleman from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for right-handed pitcher Carlos Mateo, Astros General Manager Dana Brown announced on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old Coleman has made 96 Major League appearances over the past three seasons (2021-23) for the Royals, primarily in the role of a reliever. In his MLB career, Coleman has pitched 92.1 innings and holds a record of 5-4 with a 3.88 ERA with 57 walks and 99 strikeouts.
The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Coleman had an outstanding season for the Royals in 2022. He went 5-2 in 68 relief appearances with a 2.78 ERA while allowing just 47 hits in 68.0 innings pitched for a .194 opponent batting average.
This past season, Coleman split time between Triple-A Omaha and the Majors, appearing in 23 games overall for the Royals (0-2, 8.84 ERA, 18.1 IP, 18 ER). Additionally, Coleman has hurled 3.0 scoreless innings in his three career appearances vs. the Astros, all coming in 2022.
The 19-year-old Mateo appeared in seven games for the Astros Florida Complex League team in 2023, going 0-0 with a 5.19 ERA with four walks and 12 strikeouts. In 2022, Mateo was 2-1 in 10 appearances (4 starts) in the Dominican Summer League with a 2.63 ERA.
With the Coleman trade, the Astros have 39 players on the 40-man roster.
The Astros also made two selections in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 Draft on Tuesday, selecting right-handed pitchers Railin Perez and Carlos Betancourt.
Perez was selected out of the Boston Red Sox system, where he made 32 appearances for Class A Salem this season, posting a 3.70 ERA with 69 strikeouts in 56.0 innings.
Betancourt was selected out of the Philadelphia Phillies system. He made 39 appearances, including two starts, for Class A Jersey Shore this past season, going 5-3 with a 3.69 ERA.
