The Houston Astros have been one of the biggest stories so far in this Major League Baseball season. For the fans just to hear rumors of Houston GM Jeff Luhnow possibly being interested in trading for Cole Hamels, Johnny Cueto, and possibly David Price has got to be pretty remarkable in itself.
People have asked me if Houston should give up good prospects to grab a solid starting pitcher like one of the names mentioned above? If I were Luhnow, I look at what is infront of me now and not the bigger picture so that would mean yes I want to go for a championship now. Is it risky? Sure. Like Cory Matthews once said on “Boy Meets World”: “The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward!”. Basically I want to go for it now and not think about next year….until next year. This is probably why I’m not a GM in the big leagues…..or any leagues for that matter.
Sure we know the Stros are two back of the red hot Los Angeles Angels in the A.L. West race and have had their issues with their offense and have a very young starting rotation led by the All-Star-starting Dallas Keuchel. We also know the Astros currently sit five games ahead for one to the two wildcard spots.
It’s not really hard to say what fans want of out of these Astros before this year began. I can bet realistically they wanted to be at least a .500 squad by season’s end. Am I right?
My friend and diehard Astros fan Garland Chico Rodriguez said just give me 80 wins this year. Rodriguez has actually hashtagged it #questfor80 while our very own Clint Domingue predicted a playoff berth and then a see what happens from there kind of attitude.
Could this be the year the Astros win their first A.L. pennant and reach their second World Series in franchise history? Who knows. Not many people believed in them going that far in 2005 and they did.
I thought since it is Thursday (#tbt), we could look back at that final out of the NLCS when the Astros defeated the St. Louis Cardinals to clinch a World Series berth in 2005.
