On Sunday evening in Paris, France, the 2024 Olympic Games came to a close.
Throughout the seventeen days of competition, plenty of athletes from around the world showcased their abilities, won medals of gold, silver, or bronze, and put on a show for everyone to enjoy.
Here at ESPN Southwest Louisiana, we focused our coverage on Team USA and the athletes with local ties to our area. Here is a summary of some of the most notable action at the Paris Games with an emphasis on Southwest Louisiana.
- Team USA won the overall medal count with 126 medals, beating out China who had 91 and Great Britain who had 65
- Team USA tied for the most gold medals with China, both countries securing 40
- Team USA finished with the most silver medals, bringing home 44
- Team USA also finished with the most bronze medals with 42
- Lafayette native and former LSU Tiger Mondo Duplantis won gold in the Men’s Pole Vault for Sweden; He also broke his own world record, reaching 6.25 meters
- Former LSU Tiger Sha’carri Richardson won silver in the Women’s 100m and then won gold as a part of the Women’s 4X100m Relay team for Team USA
- UL graduate Aliaksei Shostak placed 10th in the Men’s Trampoline Gymnastics for Team USA; He just missed out on making the final
- Former LSU Tigers’ duo Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss went undefeated in pool play of Women’s Beach Volleyball for Team USA; They lost in the Round of 16 to eventual silver medalist Canada
- Jose Alvarado of the New Orleans Pelicans competed for Team Puerto Rico in Men’s Basketball; They were eliminated in the knockout round
- Daniel Theiss of the New Orleans Pelicans competed for Team Germany in Men’s Basketball; They just missed out on a medal, finishing 4th
The 2028 Olympic Games will be hosted by the United States of America and will take place in Los Angeles, California.
