Defense is one of the most important aspects in college football. Last season, McNeese’s defense gave up 31 points per game to their opponents.
With 57 new players in the program and a lot of those on the defensive side, what does their linebacker group look like? Guys like Bryaden Adams and Micah Davey are back, but there’s still a ton of newness to this room.
Brayden Adams
Adams comes into his fifth season with the Cowboys as one of the team captains on the defensive side. The Barbe product appeared in nine games last season with 15 tackles.
After battling injuries most of his career, Adams will look for stability in 2023 to play one final season in front of his hometown.
Micah Davey
Davey had a strong season in 2022 for the new-look Cowboys. he recorded 68 total tackles in 11 games with eight tackles for loss and a sack. He also forced two fumbles and recovered one as well.
The son of former LSU quarterback Rohan Davey, Micah will be back to build on last season now that he will be starting in a linebacker spot. He’s 6’2″ and 239 pounds, so a strong option to watch this season.
Jordan Toaston
Toaston didn’t play much last season, appearing in just five games and recording six tackles. He’s a sophomore linebacker out of Catholic High-Baton Rouge who still has tons of room to grow and improve his game.
This upcoming season will be a critical chance for him to build off the experience he received last season.
Others to Watch
Kylen Armstead is a 6’5″ transfer from Hinds Community College, one of the better JUCO programs in America, so it’ll be interesting to see the role he has.
Also, plenty of freshmen at this position with six new linebackers in the room, including Peyton Lemaire from Barbe, Jackson Anders from Round Rock, TX, Anthony Coleman from East Ascension HS, Cale Jacobson, Darnell Thornton, and Joshua Pontigo.
