After losing their top two receivers in Josh Matthews and Mason Pierce, Gary Goff and the Cowboys will be looking to young talent at the skill positions.
Returners like Jalen Johnson, Jon McCall, Kyle Klink, and others will be the leaders of the room while there’s a plethora of freshmen and transfers to look forward to.
Jalen Johnson
Johnson appeared in nine games, catching 12 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown. At 5’9″ and 175 pounds, Johnson has a ton of playmaking ability and comes from a strong program in New Orleans at Holy Cross.
I would expect Johnson to step up along with McCall as the leaders of this receiving corps.
Jon McCall
McCall appeared in 10 games for the Cowboys in 2022, racking up 12 catches for 204 yards and a touchdown. McCall is a sophomore from Sophie B. Wright HS in New Orleans, and at 6’3″ and 201 pounds, he is the guy that can climb the ladder to make leaping grabs for whoever throws the football at Cowboy Stadium this season.
Kameron Senegal
Senegal played sparingly last season in Lake Charles, catching just four passes for 55 yards and a touchdown. However, coming from a powerhouse like Zachary, there’s no doubt that he’s prepared to take on a bigger role in the offense.
Built at 5’9″, he’s an elusive speed threat that can make vertical plays down the field. My one concern with him would be his matchup with bigger corners. Does he have the strength to overpower guys?
Kyle Klink
Klink is the top returning tight end for McNeese after appearing in ten games a year ago. He caught seven passes for 92 yards on the season. He’s a 6’4″ 245-pound junior from Maryland that possesses a great blocking ability as well as strong hands and possession.
It all depends on how much McNeese wants to use their tight ends in the passing game, but Klink could be a weapon in 2023.
Others to Watch
Reed Boyd is a freshman tight end from Barbe that should make an impact for the Cowboys, while plenty of wide receivers come into the program, including:
- AAlah Brown (Jackson State)
- Jonathan Harris (Miss Gulf Coast CC)
- Marcus Peterson Jr (Cincinnati)
- Jaylon Henry R-Fr (Woodlawn)
- Jamaal Levi (Barbe)
- Cory O’Bryant (Tomball Memorial HS)
McNeese looks to be in good shape for the future at the skill positions, but how will they shake out in 2023?
