One of the big things that head coach Tony Robichaux preaches is to not allow a team to put up a three-run inning. The Louisiana Ragin Cajuns did a solid job of that until the eighth inning and it was a big reason why UT Arlington came out of Friday’s matchup with a 7-3 win.
How It Happened:
Andrew Miller got the Mavericks on the board early with a sac fly to center field to score Boone Montgomery. However, the Cajuns responded in the second inning with a two-run single to center field by Orynn Veillon to take the lead.
That didn’t last long though when Josh Minjarez drilled a solo shot out to left field in the bottom frame to tie things up. Handsome Monica gave the Cajuns a 3-2 lead when he scored off of an error by the Mavs second baseman in the top of the fourth.
Things looked okay until the seventh inning when the Mavericks scored off of a pair of wild pitches by Jacob Schultz, giving them a one-run lead. UT Arlington put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth with a three-run inning that was highlighted by an RBI single from Anthony Dominguez.
Big Number: 3
Wild pitches are a common part of the game, but seeing three wild pitches in a game is a little out of the ordinary. Add the fact that two of them wound up giving the Mavericks a lead they wouldn’t relinquish is more than enough to frustrate some.
Player of the Game: Josh Minjarez
Minjarez only had one RBI, but you have to look at his ability to get on base to really determine his merits in a win over the Cajuns and going three-of-four on the day is a pretty good barometer.
