The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns’ baseball team defeated the Nicholls Colonels 6-2 on Wednesday night at Russo Park. The game came a day after both teams had Tuesday night contests cancelled due to weather.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Cajuns (20-23) went with Tate Hess on the mound, who was originally slated to pitch against Grambling in yesterday’s cancelled game. Hess started off strong, working a 1-2-3 top half of the first to post a zero.
Nicholls (15-26) countered with Dalton Hill, who also worked a clean first. The Cajuns had one baserunner but that was all.
In the bottom half of the second, the Cajuns got on the board first. Conor Higgs launched a mammoth homer over the right field wall to make it 1-0 Louisiana.
That lead was short-lived, as Nicholls tied things up an inning later. Logan Mock came through with the RBI single to make it 1-1.
The Colonels would take their first lead shortly after, as Jaden Collura came through with an RBI double. That made it 2-1 Nicholls.
The Cajuns would tie things up at two, and then the biggest at-bat of the game happened. With the bases loaded and two outs, Jose Torres ripped a three-run double to right center to clear the bases and give the Cajuns a 5-2 lead.
That lead was more than enough, as Dylan Theut came on and worked the final four innings. The Cajuns added an insurance run, and Theut worked the 4-inning save to give the Cajuns a 6-2 win.
BIG NUMBER: 4
It’s not often that a pitcher works a four inning save, but that’s what Theut did in this one. His reliable relief was a big lift to Matt Deggs’ team in this one.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Jose Torres
Torres had the deciding hit, bringing in three with a double. He went 3-4 in the game with those big RBIs.
UP NEXT: The Cajuns will get back into Sun Belt play when they host a three-game series against Georgia Southern. Game on is Friday with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 PM.
