Louisiana opened their run to Oklahoma City in the Baton Rouge Regional this afternoon against Omaha, champions of The Summit League. Stormy Kotzelnick had a pair of RBIs and Sophie Piskos delivered in critical situations to lead Louisiana to a 5-0 win in the first round.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Mihyia Davis got the contest started for Louisiana with a single before stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. Then, Stormy Kotzelnick drove her in with an RBI sacrifice to make it 1-0 early.
In the third, Davis reached base once again before stealing another base and coming into score on an RBI single from Kotzelnick to make it 2-0 Louisiana in the opening game of the regional.
Karly Heath extended Louisiana’s lead in the fourth inning with a home run to right center field to make it 3-0. For Heath, that was her 15th home run of the season.
After a Kotzelnick double to start the inning, Sophie Piskos hit an RBI double of her own to score Stormy and increase the lead to 4-0. After a pitching change, Lauren Allred brought Piskos in to extend the lead once again to 5-0 on a double of her own.
Kandra Lamb came on for the seventh and got the save, retiring Omaha in order to win and advance to the second round.
BIG NUMBER: 2
Louisiana had incredible plate discipline against one of the best strikeout pitchers in the country, only punching out twice in the game.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Stormy Kotzelnick
Kotzelnick delivered in a big way for the Cajuns, going 2-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
UP NEXT: Louisiana will return to Tiger Park to take on the winner of LSU and Prairie View A&M Saturday with a first pitch set for Noon.
