The Cajuns used a balanced offensive approach and a dominant pitching performance to beat UL Monroe 5-1 on Thursday night at Lamson Park. Senior Megan Schorman held UL Monroe to just one run and the Cajuns scored in four separate innings to take game one of the series. The win secured another Sun Belt Conference regular season Championship for Louisiana.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Louisiana started senior pitcher Megan Schorman. Schorman had a rocky first inning, giving up a double and then an RBI single from Andie Edwards, giving the Warhawks a 1-0 lead. However, she settled in shortly thereafter and held UL Monroe in check after that.
The Cajuns answered quickly in the bottom half of the first and used a steady run of offense throughout. Sophie Piskos sent a solo home run over the center field wall to tie things up. That was followed up in the second inning with a Maddie Hayden RBI single and a Victoria Valdez sacrifice fly which gave the Cajuns a 3-1 lead. Another solo home run, this one by Lauren Allred, extended the lead once more, this time to 4-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Cecilia Vasquez added an RBI double in the fourth to continue the Cajuns’ consistent attack and make the lead 5-1.
That would be the extent of the offense in this one. Schorman went on to finish all but the final out of the game. She was lifted for Chloe Riassetto in the final inning, allowing the senior Schorman to receive an ovation in the final regular season home-series. Riassetto finished the game for the Cajuns in the 5-1 win.
