Death. Taxes. The Louisiana Ragin Cajuns softball team winning the regular-season title. These are what seem to be the three certainties of life and Gerry Glasco’s team did just that for the 17th time in the 20 seasons of softball competition in the league’s history with a 10-2 win over Coastal Carolina early Sunday morning.
How It Happened:
The Cajuns wasted little time getting on the board with Ciara Bryan leading off the contest with a well-hit single, later stealing home to take an early 1-0 lead. Karly Heath then made it a 4-0 lead with one swing of her bat in the top of the second, sending a three-run bomb out of St. John Stadium.
The Chanticleers responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third jumpstarted by a Mackenzie Byer sac bunt that scored Makiya Thomas, but Louisiana wasn’t done launching baseballs with Alderink hitting her first home run of the season in the top of the fourth to make it a 5-2 ballgame.
Sophie Piskos helped secure the conference title in the fifth when she hit a grand slam out to center field to secure the mercy rule win for the vermilion and white.
Big Number: 18
Summer Ellyson was credited with the victory for her two and a third innings of work where she only allowed one hit and struck out two. This gave the senior her 18th victory of the season.
Player of the Game: Kaitlyn Alderink
The senior third baseman crushed it in the series finale, going three-for-four and hit her first home run of the season. Nothing short of impressive from Alderink
