The LSU Tigers softball team defeated the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns 4-2 inside Tiger Park in Baton Rouge on Tuesday night. The victory moves LSU to 34-8 and the loss moves UL to 29-15.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
LSU went with Sydney Berzon in the circle. She allowed a one-out single to Maddie Hayden, which was followed by a Laney Credeur two-run homer to put the Cajuns up 2-0 right away.
Louisiana countered LSU’s left-handed heavy lineup with southpaw Chloe Riassetto. She struggled through the first inning, ultimately allowing an RBI single from Taylor Pleasants. Then, in the bottom of the second, the Tigers got one more, this time on a fielder’s choice ground out. That tied the game at two after two innings.
After a quiet third inning on both sides, LSU responded in the bottom of the fourth. A hit and an error put two on, and Ciara Briggs came through with a clutch two-out, two-run single to put the Tigers in front 4-2. That signaled a pitching change for UL, as Sam Landry replaced Riassetto.
The Cajuns threatened in the top of the sixth, getting two runners on with just one out. However, Berzon worked out of trouble with a groundout and strikeout to keep the lead at 4-2 for LSU.
Landry kept the Tigers off of the scoreboard. Then in the bottom of the seventh, the Cajuns got the tying run to the plate with one out. However, they were unable to capitalize, as Berzon shut the door for the 4-2 LSU win.
BIG NUMBER: 2
Louisiana got two runs in the first, but that was all they got in the game. Berzon was able to settle in and navigate the lineup, pitching out of a couple of jams in the LSU victory.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Ciara Briggs
Briggs struck out three times. However, she had the clutch two-out, two-run single to give LSU the lead and eventually the win.
UP NEXT: Louisiana will host Nicholls tomorrow night at 6:00 at Lamson Park. LSU will play at Tennessee against a top-10 ranked Volunteers team beginning on Friday at 5:00.
