The Florida State Seminoles used a strong second half to pull away from the LSU Tigers, 45-24 inside Camping World Stadium at the Camping World Kickoff in Orlando, Florida. Acadiana native Keon Coleman went for over 100 yards and three scores as the Seminoles stunned Brian Kelly’s team on Sunday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
LSU took the opening kickoff and went right down the field. However, Florida State responded with a goal line stand and a stop on 4th and Goal from the one yard-line. The Seminoles then took the ball down the field and connected on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Travis to the Opelousas Catholic product, Keon Coleman.
LSU went right down the field once more, and this time converted the touchdown on a two-yard touchdown run by Tre Bradford. The first quarter ended with a 7-7 tie.
There was a strange sequence in which LSU muffed a punt, similar to last year’s game. However, Jordan Travis threw an interception on the first play of the next drive and the turnovers essentially cancelled each other out. After the teams traded punts for a while, Jayden Daniels set LSU up with a 40-yard run and Noah Cain punched it in from one yard out to make it 14-7 LSU late in the first half.
Florida State answered with a 10 play, 75-yard drive capped off by another touchdown by Coleman. However, LSU had just enough time to work down the field and set up a field goal. That drive was created by a long run from Josh Williams, and Damian Ramos converted a 36-yard field goal to make it 17-14 LSU at the half.
Florida State got the ball to start the second half and drove down the field, but stalled and kicked a field goal. After an LSU punt, the Seminoles had it back and this time went all the way in for the touchdown. The highlight of the drive was a 4th and 1 pass to Lawrance Toafili that got all the way down to the one and paved the way for a Travis 1-yard touchdown run. That made the score 24-17 with FSU leading.
LSU began a drive to try to tie the game. However, Daniels fired to a receiver that had fallen down and the Seminoles intercepted it to regain possession. Florida State was able to convert with yet another Coleman touchdown reception.
After that, FSU pulled away as they scored two more touchdowns to put the game out of reach. Daniels did throw a 75-yard touchdown pass in the closing moments to bring the score to its’ final at 45-24.
BIG NUMBER: 359
The LSU secondary entered the season with question marks in the secondary. Those question marks seem to have grown after one game, as Florida State threw for 359 yards and four passing scores.
