Trey Amos had his name called on Friday night.
The former Catholic High of New Iberia multi-sport star received a phone call telling him he had been drafted into the National Football League. With the No. 61 pick, the Washington Commanders selected the Ole Miss cornerback in the second round of the NFL Draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Amos is coming off a breakout season at Ole Miss, which increased his draft stock considerably.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound cornerback was the Rebels’ lockdown corner and had 47 total tackles, three interceptions, and one forced fumble. Amos led the SEC and was ranked third nationally in total passes defended (16) and pass breakups (13). The 13 breakups were the most by an Ole Miss player since 2015.
For that performance, Amos earned All-SEC First Team honors and All-America Second Team honors from The Sporting News.
Amos began his college career playing for the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns. In three seasons, he would appear in 34 games, recording 59 tackles and 14 pass breakups. He entered the NCAA Transfer Portal after the 2022 season and signed with Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide. He primarily played as a backup in 14 games, recording 12 tackles and five pass breakups.
After Saban retired, Amos entered the portal again and signed with Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels.
Amos was a multi-sport star at Catholic High-New Iberia.
He helped the Panthers win the 2017 state championship in football and finish as runner-up in 2018, when he was named District 7-2A MVP. He also lettered in basketball and track and field, where he won a state championship in the long jump.
Amos becomes the second Ole Miss player from the Acadiana area to be drafted this year. Rebels wide receiver Trey Harris was selected earlier in Friday’s second round by the Los Angeles Chargers.
