Georgia and TCU met tonight in the CFP National Championship Game as the Bulldogs were looking to finish undefeated and go back-to-back as national champions. Stetson Bennett accounted for six total touchdowns en route to the widest margin of victory as Georgia beat TCU 65-7 in Sofi Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Georgia scored early and often in the first half, with the first score coming four minutes into the contest. Stetson Bennett led the Bulldogs on a five-play, 57-yard drive that ended with a 21-yard touchdown run by the Heisman finalist from Blackshear, Ga to make it 7-0. Jack Podlesny added a 24-yard field goal to extend the lead to double digits with six minutes left in the first quarter.
TCU answered with a 75-yard scoring drive set up by a 60-yard pass to Derius Davis before Max Duggan found the endzone to make it 10-7. Georgia came back two minutes with a 37-yard strike to Ladd McConkey to make it 17-7.
An interception by Chris Smith put the ball back in Georgia’s hands and Bennett got his second rushing touchdown of the game, this time from six yards out to make it 24-7 with 8:30 left in the first half.
Georgia managed to score 14 more points in the final 90 seconds of the first half, started by a Kendall Milton touchdown run from a yard out to make it 31-7. Then, after another interception by Javon Bullard, Stetson Bennett found Adoni Mitchell from 22 yards out to make it 38-7 at the half.
The Bulldogs got the ball to start the second half, but were held by TCU. Following a TCU punt, Georgia went back to work. Bennett led the offense 55 yards down the field on four plays before finding Brock Bowers for a 22-yard touchdown pass to now extend the lead to 45-7 with 10:52 left in the 3rd quarter in Los Angeles.
As the third quarter was winding down, Stetson Bennett tied Joe Burrow’s record with his sixth touchdown accounted for, this time finding McConkey again for a 14-yard touchdown to make it 52-7 with one quarter left in the 2022 season.
Georgia wasn’t done in the fourth either, as Branson Robinson scored from a yard out to make it 59-7 after Bennett was subbed out for Carson Beck at the quarterback spot. Two minutes later, Robinson scored his second touchdown of the quarter, but a missed PAT kept it 65-7 in favor of the Bulldogs.
The clock struck zero, and Georgia went back-to-back for only the sixth time in college football history.
