This is the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns year.
In the history of the university, UL had never won 10 games in a season until this year.
They finished their regular season with a 10-2 overall record after a 31-30 win over the ULM Warhawks.
It’s almost undisputed that this is the best Ragin’ Cajuns football team the university has ever seen.
UL didn’t lose a game on the road this season, they clinched the Sun Belt Conference West Division, earned a spot in the conference championship and capped it all off with their 10th win.
They weren’t perfect on offense against ULM. They weren’t perfect on defense. UL entered the game averaging 39 points per game on offense and only allowing 16 points per game on defense. They scored 31 and gave up 30. ULM’s quarterback Caleb Evans finished with 330 passing yards. The Warhawks recorded 257 rushing yards.
Again, it wasn’t perfect. It didn’t have to be.
The win over ULM was about the history that came along with it, not the statistics.
It was almost meant to be as ULM kicker Jared Porter missed the potential game-winning 35-yard field goal with two seconds left.
UL closed out their historic season on a six-game winning streak and they proved they can win games in any fashion. One week after they dominated Troy 53-3, UL closed out an one-point win over their in-state rival.
Junior quarterback Levi Lewis has grown in his role as the leader for the UL offense, totaling 20 touchdown passes to only three interceptions. The three-headed rushing attack is playing as well as expected. Elijah Mitchell, Raymond Calais and Trey Ragas have combined for 2,643 rushing yards this year.
And the defense showed what they can do by holding four teams this season to only one score in an entire game (Texas Southern, Coastal Carolina, Texas State and Troy).
The season isn’t over yet, though. The Ragin’ Cajuns still have the conference championship against Appalachian State. This is an App State program the Ragin’ Cajuns have never beaten. The Mountaineers are 7-0 all-time against UL.
App State defeated the Ragin’ Cajuns 17-7 at Cajun Field earlier this season. But hey, UL has accomplished other things this year that have never been done before.
