LSU offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock has been named a finalist for the Broyles Award, given annually to college football’s top assistant coach.
A selection committee of former head coaches, broadcasters, and a committee from the Football Writers Association of America narrowed the list to five, with the winner being announced next Monday in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Denbrock is joined by Georgia’s Mike Bobo, Iowa’s Phil Parker, Michigan’s Sherrone Moore, and Oregon’s Will Stein.
Denbrock has engineered one of the most explosive offenses in college football as LSU leads the country in total offense and scoring. The Tigers also lead the nation in plays of 20+, 30+, and 40+ yards.
LSU finished its regular season with a 42-30 win over Texas A&M as the Tigers scored 40 or more points for the ninth time this season, falling just one game short of the 2019 team’s record of 10 games.
LSU is the only program in America averaging 300 yards passing and 200 yards rushing per game and ranks in the top 10 in both categories (4th in passing and 7th in rushing).
Denbrock’s offense has also produced the Heisman Trophy candidate Jayden Daniels, who has arguably been the most dynamic player in college football. He leads the nation in total offense by nearly 75 yards, averaging 412.2 yards per game.
Daniels is one of just five players in SEC history to account for 50 touchdowns in a season, joining former Tiger Joe Burrow, Tim Tebow, Cam Newton, and Bryce Young, with each of the four going on to win the Heisman.
The former Arizona State quarterback leads the country in passing touchdowns with 40 and has also rushed for 10 scores for a nation’s leading 50 TDs responsible for. Daniels also became the first player in FBS history to rush for 200 yards and pass for 350 yards in the game that he set an SEC record with 606 total yards against Florida earlier this month.
Wide receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. have combined to catch 146 passes for 2,625 yards and 29 touchdowns on the season. Nabers is now the LSU leader in receptions with 186 and the Lafayette native leads the nation in yards with 1,546 and is second in touchdowns with 14. Thomas has 60 catches for 1,079 yards and a nation-leading 15 touchdowns.
