LAFAYETTE — Louisiana-Lafayette officially announced the approval of baseball coach Tony Robichaux’s five-year contract extension Tuesday.
“We strongly believe that Tony Robichaux is one of the top baseball coaches in the country,” Athletic Director Scott Farmer said in a statement released by the university. “Both on the baseball field and in life, Tony has been a tremendous teacher and role model to all of the young men who have worn the Ragin’ Cajuns uniform. We are excited that he has committed to leading our program over the next five years.”
Included in the incentives are bonuses for reaching various levels of the NCAA tournament, including $25,000 for winning a national championship, as well as bonuses for postseason awards, academics and fan attendance.
The school will also deposit $30,000 into an interest-bearing annuity in Robichaux’s name each season, and Robichaux will earn an additional $30,000 a year for radio appearances, which will be paid in 60 monthly installments of $2,500.
Robichaux won his 1,000th game as a head coach in 2014 when the Cajuns beat Alabama, making him one of just 16 active coaches with 1,000 career wins. In 21 years as the Cajuns coach, Robichaux has a 774-490-1 record.
The Cajuns are one of only three schools nationally to win at least 100 games the past two seasons, joining Vanderbilt and LSU, and are one of six teams to reach the super regional round in each of the past two seasons.
