Four days after Elijah McGuire worked out for the Miami Dolphins, the former University of Louisiana star running back was signed to the team’s 10-man practice squad on Thursday. Palm Beach Post’s Joe Schad was the first to report the signing.
The Dolphins currently have three running backs on the 53-man roster including Myles Gaskin, DeAndre Washington and Patrick Laird. Matt Breida is on the COVID-19 list and Salvon Ahmed is sidelined with a shoulder injury.
The 5-foot-10, 214-pound McGuire is entering his third season in the NFL after being drafted in the sixth round in the 2017 draft by the Jets. In his first two seasons, McGuire has 180 carries for 591 yards and 4 rushing touchdowns, while also adding 36 receptions for 370 yards and 2 receiving touchdowns.
McGuire was cut by the Jets at the end of training camp in 2019 and spent time on the practice squads of the Cleveland Browns and the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs waived McGuire this past September and he was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys who then released him in late October.
McGuire had a record-setting career with the Ragin’ Cajuns as he rushed for 4,301 yards and 42 touchdowns while catching 130 passes for 1,394 yards and 10 touchdowns and was named the Sun Belt Player of the Year (2014).
Prior to his storied career at UL, McGuire was an all-state running back at Vandebilt Catholic as he led the state as a senior with 2,603 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns.
