Former LSU shortstop Alex Bregman has agreed to a contract with the Houston Astros, MLB.com reported Wednesday, and ex-first baseman Chris Chinea is signing with St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.
A message to Bregman was not returned.
Bregman said he “thinks” he will be introduced on Thursday at Minute Maid Park before the Astros’ game against the Yankees, he told MLB.com.
Chinea, a 17th-round pick who will forgo his senior season, said he will begin his place in professional baseball in Johnson City, Tennessee, with the Cardinals’ rookie ball club.
Second baseman Jared Foster, a fifth round pick to the Los Angeles Angels, will sign Thursday, he said, and start in Orem, Utah, with their advanced-rookie club.
Center fielder Andrew Stevenson, a second-round pick by the Washington Nationals, said he plans to sign a contract over the “next couple of days.” He’s unsure where he’ll begin in the minor league system.
Junior outfielder Mark Laird said he’s scheduled to sign Friday with the Philadelphia Phillies, who picked him in the ninth round. Senior catcher Kade Scivicque, a fourth-round selection, said he’ll likely sign next week with Detroit.
Left-handed pitcher Zac Person and third baseman Conner Hale signed earlier this week. Person, a ninth-round draft pick with the Astros, will start Houston’s Class A short sseason Tri-City Valley Cats in New York on Thursday. Hale, a ninth-round pick by the Seattle Mariners, will begin playing with the Everett Aquasox in Everett, Washington, the Mariners’ Class A short season club.
