Harvey, Louisiana Native Zaila Avant-garde Wins Scripps National Spelling Bee

For the first time ever, a Louisiana native has won the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The competition was the first since 2019 and saw Harvey native Zaila Avant-garde be the last one standing after correctly spelling “murraya”.

While she’s a phenomenal wordsmith, she’s equally talented on the basketball court. The 14-year-old holds three Guinness World Records for her ability to dribble multiple basketballs at a time.

What’s next for this 14-year-old prodigy? Her next goal is to make the USA Basketball under-16 national team.
