We have now approached the time of year where the hysteria usually calms down a bit when it comes to what we are talking about in the 103.7 The Game Universe. The raucous city of Omaha has gone quiet, the champions of basketball and hockey have been crowned, and the waiting for football begins. This used to be the case. Not anymore.
These days there is no calm. There is no “chill.” There is only hype! That is what I celebrate this coming Fourth of July. Hype is America’s greatest export and there is plenty to be hype for as we approach our great nation’s birthday. Besides the excitement we have for the classics like hot dogs, fireworks, and baseball; this 4th of July I will be thinking about how great it is to live in a place and in a time where a boxer and a martial artist can charge the world as much as they want to charge for a super-fight on worldwide pay per view. As those fireworks are bursting through the sky I will be thinking about how amazing it is that I get to play Coach O sound bites for a living. If you ask me how I am doing living in America, well, I’m blessed; yes!
These are just a few things I know will be running through my mind on my favorite holiday. I do no think enough people revel in everything this underrated celebration should be. This weekend and next week, if you are fortunate to have some extra days off, should involve copious amounts of cold adult beverages, belly flops, and sports played in pools, cul de sacs, and driveways. If you are an aging uncle, take the occasion to challenge your cocky nephew to a game of one on one in some pool basketball. Dunk his head in water for leverage and slam it home! The family doesn’t get together that often anymore. This is your chance to show him he needs to get his face out of his phone and hit the weights! If you are the chubby kid in the family, show off your God given talent and make a bigger splash than all of your cousins with canon balls and jackknives!
These are all just suggestions. I am not going to tell you how you should act or think on the Fourth of July because that is not what the holiday is about. The holiday is about celebrating America the way you want. After all, it is called Independence Day for a reason. You are free to sip wine and eat pea soup for all I care. As long as you understand that when you see those fireworks in the sky, you are standing in the best place in the entire Universe; the land of the free and the home of hype, the United States of America! Happy Fourth of July!
