Olympics Roundup: July 31st

This summer, the Olympics are taking place in Paris, France.

Here at ESPN Southwest Louisiana, we want to make sure you are kept in the know with all things happening regarding the USA as well as athletes with local ties.

Swimming

  • The USA’s very own Katie Ledecky dominated in the 1500m women’s freestyle, finishing in 15:30.02 and earning a gold medal in the event. Ledecky’s time on Wednesday beats out her 2021 Olympic record of 15:35.35.
  • In women’s 200m breaststroke, Kate Douglass was first in her heat. Her time of 2:23.44 was good for third best on the day. Lilly King was 4th in that same heat as she completed all 200m in 2:24.91.
  • Men’s 200m breaststroke featured and was highlighted by Ryan Murphy finishing 2nd in his heat and had a time of 1:57.03. Keaton Jones’ time of 1:57.54 placed him in 4th in his heat.
  • The women’s 200m butterfly semifinal featured Alex Shackell and Regan Smith. Both placed 2nd in their respective brackets. Shackell’s time was 2:06.46 while Smith’s was 2:05.39.
  • Women’s 100m final was where the States earned another medal. Torri Huske won silver as she finished in 52.29 seconds. Gretchen Walsh was 8th as he time was 53.04.

Diving

  • US women’s divers Jessica Parratto and Delaney Schnell finished 6th in synchronized 10m with 287.52 points.

Basketball

  • The US men’s team defeated South Sudan 103-86 in a group-stage matchup. Bam Adebayo led the States in scoring with 18 while Lebron James finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists.
  • New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado and former LSU Tiger Tremont Waters’ Puerto Rican squad fell to Serbia 107-66. Points-wise, Waters scored five and Alvarado put up two.

3×3 Basketball

  • Hailey Van Lith and the United States women’s team fell in pool play for the second day. This time 20-17 to Azerbaijan.
  • The American men fell to Poland 19-17.

Table Tennis

  • US player Kank Jha won his round of 32 men’s match over Panagiotis Gionis 4-2.

Tennis

  • US men’s doubles players Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz won their second-round matchup vs the Netherlands’ Haase and Rojer 6-3 6-4.
  • Paul also won earlier in the day in men’s singles over France’s Corentin Moutet 7-6 6-3.
  • America’s Danielle Collins lost in the women’s singles quarter-finals 1-6 6-2 4-1 to Poland’s Iga Swiatek.

Beach Volleyball

  • In pool C of the women, USA’s Hughes and Cheng won both sets of a preliminary match against France’s Vieira and Chamereau 21-16 23-21.

Volleyball

  • In the preliminary round for the women, the USA beat Serbia three sets to two. The scores were 25-17 25-20 20-25 14-25 17-15.

Water Polo

  • The US women beat Italy 10-3 in group B’s preliminary round.

Football

  • The USA defeated Australia 2-1.

Judo

  • US John Jayne won his round of 32 elimination match over Christian Parlati 10-0. Jayne then lost in the round of 16 to Korea’s Juyeop Han 1-0.

Boxing

  • For men’s 71kg preliminaries round of 16, USA’s Omari Jones beat Chinese Taipei’s Chia Wei Kan 5:0.
  • The same goes for Jahmal Harvey in men’s 57kg as he won against Brazil’s Luiz Gabriel Oliveira 3:2.

Canoe Slalom

  • America’s Evy Leibfarth won bronze in the women’s canoe single final in a time of 109.95 seconds.

Cycling BMX Freestyle

  • Perris Benegas earned a silver medal for the USA in the women’s park final. Her best run was 90.70. Hannah Roberts was 8th as her best run was 70.00.
  • Marcus Christopher just missed out on adding a medal to the USA’s total, finishing 4th in the men’s BMX freestyle final with a best of 93.11. Justin Dowell was 7th with a best of 88.35.

Cycling Road

  • Chloe Dygert won bronze in the women’s individual time trial. Dygert’s time was 1:32.46. Taylor Knibb finished 19th with a time of 3:25.22.

Triathalon

  • For women’s individual, Taylor Spivey finished 10th with a time of 1:57:11. Taylor Knibb was 19th at 1:58:37, and Kirsten Kasper was 49th. Her time was 2:06:38.
  • Seth Rider for the men’s time of 1:47:53 placed him in 29th while Morgan Pearson was 31st as completed the event in 1:48:26

Badminton

  • US player Beiwen Zhang defeated Thuy Linh Nguyen in women’s group play 2-0 22-20 22-20.

Fencing

  • The States won the 7-8 placement of the men’s sabre team, defeating Canada 45-43.

Rowing

  • USA’s Jacob Plihal ranked first in his bracket and qualified in the Final C of the men’s single sculls semifinals with a time of 6:56.95.
  • For the men’s pair semifinals, Billy Bender and Oliver Bub finished 6th as their time was 6:46.11 and qualified in the Final B bracket.
  • America’s women’s pair of Azja Czajkowski and Jess Thoeness qualified in Final A of the semifinals. Their time was 7:15.59.
