High school softball is alive and well in South Louisiana, especially in Beautiful Broussard.
Tonight was just another example as the Select Softball State Championships took place at St Julien Park. In the first game of the nightcap, #1 Opelousas Catholic had a dominant pitching performance and capitalized on an error as they defeated #4 St John 1-0 in the semifinals.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The contest between the Eagles and Vikings was back and forth between two great pitchers.
Innings went by quickly as neither team could get enough traction off the pitchers to put runs on the board.
It wasn’t until the 6th inning that Opelousas Catholic was able to claw across the plate. After a one-out triple, the next batter popped up a bunt to St John’s pitcher, but the throw over to 3rd to get the double play was wild, scoring the Vikings’ baserunner and taking the 1-0 lead late in the 6th.
St John would try to mount some offense as they got a 2-out double in the 7th, but Opelousas Catholic was able to get the final out and secure their spot in the title game tomorrow.
BIG NUMBER: 6
The first run of the game wasn’t scored until the 6th inning, when the Vikings capitalized on the error from St John.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Ashley Little
The pitcher for Opelousas Catholic kept St John off the scoreboard all night, going the distance to secure a spot in the title game for the Vikings.
UP NEXT: The Vikings will battle #2 Calvary Baptist tomorrow at 3:30pm for the Division IV title at St Julien Park in Broussard.
