LISTEN: Frank Wilson Talks New Gig at McNeese, Recruiting, and More

It’s a new era for McNeese State football with the Cowboys hiring former LSU recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson.

Wilson, who was formally introduced by the university on Friday, joined Under the Dome with CD on Saturday and talked about how he is handling the situation that he’s been put in. Considering that the second phase of the signing period is right around the corner, he’s having to push the pavement but it’s not a matter of signing guys just to sign them.

“We’re not sporadic and desperate to take players on signing day just to take them. National Signing Day in February will be the first date you can sign, but it won’t be the last.” Wilson said, “We’ll take our time and do it right. Regardless, time is still of the essence and ideally we’d have it completed but we may not sign the entire class on National Signing Day purposefully to make sure we get it right.”

The new gig is a lot more different for him as well because of the tradition that McNeese State has. Wilson mentioned that he was trying to establish a brand at UTSA, stating that they left it in a better place than what it was after spending the last four years as the head coach of the Roadrunners. When it comes to the history and tradition of the Cowboys football program, it’s all about waking things back up.

“I’m honored to be a part of the giants of coaches that have gone through here over the years.” Wilson quipped, “The Coach Keaslers of the world, what Matt Viator and Tommy Tate did and the ones that came before them as well. We’re just going to try and get back to our winning ways and that’s McNeese football.”

Check out the full interview where Wilson talks about the hiring process, the excitement of being back in the state of Louisiana, and his reaction to the LSU Tigers winning the national championship.
