The monumental news broke Friday that LSU basketball landed a commitment from 2018 Scotlandville (LA) five-star point guard Javonte Smart.
Smart, who has a wealth of Team USA Basketball experience, chose the Tigers over potential suitors Kentucky, Kansas and UCLA, among others.
“I just thought this is the best thing for me. I’ve watched them [LSU] work out,” Smart told Bumper to Bumper Sports. “I like how they are with their guys and how they just get their guys better.”
Asked how much of a difference the transition to head coach Will Wade made in the context of his decision, Smart responded: “It was all the same. LSU has always been like my city. I’ve always had eyes on ‘em. And I’ve talked with Will. We’ve been talking a lot. This is the best fit for me.”
Named Gatorade Player of the Year in Louisiana two years running, Smart (6-foot-4, 190 pounds) averaged 25.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 2.1 steals per game while leading the Hornets to a Division I state title in 2017.
Smart, who’s actively recruiting other blue chippers to join him in the Red Stick, did elaborate on his pledge to LSU for the time being.
“I’m just committed right now and whatever happens, happens,” Smart concluded.
