Heading into the season, the second week of the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (6-0) softball season was going to be the real litmus test for how far this team was going to go. They passed the first test on Thursday evening with a 9-4 win over the Oregon State Beavers (4-2).
Missy Nunez opened up the scoring for Orgeon State in the top of the second with a solo shot out to center field. The Cajuns responded in a big way in the bottom half of the inning with three runs that was kickstarted by an RBI single down the left field line courtesy of Kourtney Gremillion that got Lexie Comeaux across home plate.
Louisiana increased their lead in the third with a pair of runs, but really exploded in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run blast to left center by Comeaux to make it 8-1. The Beavers fired back in the top of the fifth though with a three-run bomb out to left center from Shelby Weeks to cut the deficit to four runs.
It wasn’t enough though as the Cajuns put it away when Alissa Dalton stole home in the bottom of the sixth.
Summer Ellyson got her second win of the season, allowing four runs off of seven hits, walked two, and struck out four in four and two-thirds innings of work. Kylee Jo Trahan earned the save allowing one hit in two and third.
The Cajuns will return to action on Saturday when they take on 2nd-ranked Florida in a doubleheader with first pitch for game one set for 3 pm.
