Tonight’s ballgame between the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (16-17) and the McNeese Cowboys (13-19) had everything. Great defensive plays, a late inning rally, and an offensive onslaught from both teams. It was a wild one, but the Cajuns were able to come away with a 12-10 win thanks to a clutch performance from Michael Chaumont.
How It Happened
The Cajuns got things done early in the ballgame with a three-run inning highlighted by an RBI single by Kennon Fontenot to take an early lead. Shan Selman got McNeese on the board in the third with a fielder’s choice by Shan Selman to score Jak Cochran.
However, the Cajuns put together another three-run inning highlighted by a two-run single courtesy of Zach LaFleur. After the Cajuns made it a 7-2 ballgame in the fourth, McNeese’s offense unloaded putting together seven runs capped off by a three-run bomb from Cochran to give the Cowboys a 9-7 lead.
The Cajuns were able to respond though in the bottom of the sixth with a big five-run inning, all started by an RBI single up the middle from Kennon Fontenot to get the Cajuns right back in it, going up 12-9. Rei Bourque tried to get McNeese back in it, but the Cajuns closed the door shut thanks to Michael Chaumont striking out Cochran in the ninth to record his first career save.
Brett Williams improved to 2-0 on the season, despite allowing six runs off of five hits in two innings of work.
Big Number: 9
The Cajuns may not be able to crush the ball at will, but it’s safe to say that they know how to manufacture some runs. They were able to get 12 runs off of a total of nine hits. It’s not pretty, but they were able to capitalize off of the mistakes that McNeese made.
Play of the Game: Triple Play
It’s not often that the Cajuns turn three, but they were able to hold off the Cowboys with a 6-4-3 triple play in the seventh off of a line drive by Brett Whelton.
Player of the Game: Dustin Duhon
How can you not have a guy that put up a 5-for-5 ballgame be named player of the game? The Cowboys DH was phenomenal in a losing effort.
