These Sunday games for the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (6-4) haven’t come easy. Just last weekend, the Cajuns lost 8-3 to Sam Houston State after taking the first two games.
This time around though, the Cajuns were able to get out to a 6-0 lead after two innings thanks to a five run second inning highlighted by a two-run triple by Ishmael Edwards. However, Southern Miss (8-3) was able to hang around and get off several big innings to come away with an extra innings victory.
“The bunt you can’t really say that cost us the game, it was pitching and defense that cost us the game.” Coach Tony Robichaux said of the “We had a chance to win an ugly game at the end and we just don’t get the squeeze down and they come back the next inning.”
The Cajuns looked to be in control once again after the seventh inning where they put up four more runs to take an 11-8 lead. The game changed though with Hunter Kasuls committing a throwing error to start the eighth inning. The Golden Eagles were able to get two runs across and had a runner on first. With Taylor Braley up to bat, he hit one to Joe Robbins, who had been stellar defensively for most of the game overthrew Alex Pinero and that was the opportunity Southern Miss needed to tie things up.
Southern Miss was able to finish strong in the 11th with another four-run inning to make it a 15-11 victory.
Jack Burk dropped to 0-2 with two earned runs off two hits in two and two-thirds innings of work.
The Cajuns will hit the road again for a midweek matchup against Tulane (3-8) with first pitch set for 6:30 pm.
