The Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (6-7) looked great on Friday night, shutting out Loyola Marymount (6-7) 5-0 thanks to a big bounce-back performance by Brandon Young in relief.
How It Happened:
Jonathan Windham got things going for the Cajuns in the bottom of the second with a two-out, two-run double that landed in the right place to get Nathan Camp and Todd Lott across home plate with relative ease. Brennan Breaux followed that up with a solo shot to right field to lead off the bottom of the third and give the Cajuns a 3-0 lead.
Lott joined in on the fun in the bottom of the fourth when he hit a sac fly out to right field to get Hayden Cantrelle home. Windham then put the game out of reach in the sixth inning with an RBI single out to left center field to take a 5-0 lead. After Wednesday’s nailbiter in Lake Charles, it didn’t seem like it would be quite enough, but a solid four innings of work by Young was more than enough to give them a convincing win over the Lions to open up the weekend series.
Big Number: 8
Eight strikeouts by Gunner Leger in five innings of work is nothing short of impressive for a pitcher in his third start of the season. That being said, both Leger and Young had solid afternoons on the mound with 13 combined strikeouts.
Player of the Game: Brandon Young
Young opened up the season with a tough loss to the Texas Longhorns, ballooning his ERA to 15.00. That ERA went down significantly over the course of four innings. In those four frames of baseball, Young didn’t allow a hit, walked one, and struck out five batters. That was more than enough to drop his ERA down to a 6.43.
